CHANCE CHESS: MODIFIED RULES

            Chess is a game primarily reliant on the use of player skill and strategy.  Adopting chance would force the player to rethink one’s strategy. With this forceful game-changer, the rules of Chess had to be modified to cater for the idea of chance– every single rule (with the odd exception) has been modified to facilitate chance to give Chess a new dynamic whilst still retaining the core foundations that chess upholds to this day. In the end, it’s more accessible as Victor Eband states “Games of chance are more along the lines of games that are good for children.” (www.cashgamecentral.com, 2010). So what has been changed, why, when and how? Firstly what are the new modified rules of chance chess?

RULES MODIFICATION OF THE GAME

  • Almost every single rule has been changed to cater for the chance mechanic. Whenever an action must take place, chance determines the outcome. This works as shown below.

STARTING THE GAME – BOTH PLAYERS ROLL THE SIX SIDED DIE IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER. WHOEVER ROLLS THE HIGHEST NUMBER MOVES THEIR FIRST PAWN AND NOTHING ELSE, FOLLOWED BY THE OPPONENT MAKING THE SAME MOVE.

  • Players can either move their porn forwards one space of two - only two spaces can be moved on an pawns first move.

MOVING THE PIECES – TO DECIDE WHICH PIECE CAN BE MOVED, THE PLAYER(S) MUST ROLL THE SIX SIDED DIE AND MOVE THE PIECE THAT IS APPROPRIATE. THESE ARE;

  • If an odd number is rolled, then only a pawn can be moved
  • If an even number is rolled, any piece besides a pawn can be moved
  • If a six is rolled, any piece can be moved on the board.
  • If an odd number is rolled and there are no pawns on the board, the player must forfeit their turn to the opponent.

CAPTURING A PIECE – WHEN A PIECE IS ATTACKED, PLAYERS MUST BATTLE BY BOTH ROLLING A DIE THREE TIMES EACH. WHOEVER GAINS THE HIGHEST TOTAL OUT OF THESE ROLLS WINS.

  • If the attacker has a higher total, they capture their opponent’s piece and stay in that place.
  • If the defender has a higher total, the attacked must move back to their original place and forfeit their turn.

CHECK – WHEN A PLAYER’S KING CAN BE CAPTURED BY AN OPPOSING SIDES PIECE, THE PLAYER IS IN CHECK “MUST” ATTEMPT AN ESCAPE. TO DO THIS;

  • The player must roll the die three times. Two of these three rolls must be an even number to evade capture.
  • If the player doesn’t roll two even numbers, he or she is in check mate.

CHECK MATE – WHEN A PLAYER’S KING CANNOT EVADE ANOTHER OPPONENT’S PIECE EITHER BY FAILING TO EVADE THE CHECK SCENARIO OR BEING INSTANTLY CAUGHT IN THAT SITUATION. BOTH PLAYERS MUST ROLL THE DIE TEN TIMES EACH. WHOEVER HAS THE HIGHEST TOTAL WINS THAT BATTLE.

  • If the defender has a higher total, he/she can remove any piece that is blocking his/her way and then take his/her next turn.
  • If the attacker has a higher total, he/she wins the game.

PROMOTIONS – WHEN A PLAYER’S PAWN REACHES THE FAR END OF THE BOARD, HE/SHE CAN PROMOTE THEIR PAWN TO ANY OTHER PIECE.

  • The player must roll an odd number to successfully promote their pawn.
